Occupation: Retired

Employer: N/A

College: U.S.Naval Academy, 1975

How did you become involved with Team 4Mil? My association with Team 4Mil is borne of a four-year affiliation with the US Naval Academy Cycling Club. As a USNA grad (’75) and the father of a Navy cyclist, I have traveled with and provided regular support for the team for several years. Individuals with whom I share those trips will be riding as part of Team 4Mil.

What is your athletic history? My experience includes years of recreational running, cycling, triathlon and a quarter-century of rugby, beginning with USNA Rugby Club in ’74, and ending with the Used-to-Bees in ’99 as a result of hip replacement. I have notched many stints coaching basketball, rugby and springboard diving. Currently my time is spent coaching diving for three high schools.

Do you have a military affiliation? I served seven years as a Naval Officer after graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1975. My wife Wanda was a Naval Intelligence Officer when we met and married. My son Paul is a 2007 graduate of the US Military Academy and is currently serving on the front. Sam, my younger boy, a very competitive cyclist, graduated from the U.S.Naval Academy this year, and is currently serving aboard ship in the Persian Gulf.

What do you look forward to most about RAAM? I consider myself a life-time road tripper; RAAM represents the ultimate road trip for me. The opportunity to support a great group of cyclists, some folks that I consider to be very special, appeals to me greatly.

What do you look forward to least? My rest is important to me. Us old guys need our beauty sleep, and gosh knows, I don’t get enough of it now. I don’t look forward to missing my sleep. It is, however, the least that I can do to support those who gave for me……our Wounded Warriors. Additionally, I’m going to have a problem keeping the speedometer at 21 MPH…..fortunately I will have a bicycle pacing me!

Shane Keating

Occupation: Senior System Administrator

Employer: Global Science and Technology (GST) @ NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

College: University of Maryland

How did you become involved with Team 4Mil? My association with Team 4Mil started with Dan Schindler and I talking about the 2009 RAAM race finish in Annapolis.

What is your athletic history? My experience includes years of recreational swimming, cycling and triathlons. I have coached my son’s baseball and soccer teams.

Do you have a military affiliation? I have never served in the military but my Father, Sister, and Brother all served in the Navy.

What do you look forward to most about RAAM? Being able to support a of a group of riders that have the desire to ride in this race and enjoying a long road trip.

What do you look forward to least? I can get by without much sleep but I think I will struggle with not being able to go the bathroom when I want!

Occupation: Commercial Nuclear Power

Employer: Arizona Public Services, Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant

College: Western International University

How did you become involved with Team 4Mil? My association with Team 4Mil is borne from my volunteer time with the Wounded Warrior Project

What is your athletic history? Recreational cycling.

Do you have a military affiliation?
I served four years in the U.S.M.C. 1975-1979

What do you look forward to most about RAAM?
To safely and successfully get Team 4Mil across this beautiful country.

What do you look forward to least?
The end!

Lockett Pitman

<img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-142" title="Lockett Head shot Mt.
Occupation: Help and support others

Employer: Worked with IBM for 29 years

College: Trinity College, Texas State University, University of Texas

How long have you known about RAAM? What triggered your decision to crew? I’ve known about RAAM for a number of years. My son, Captain Kyle Pitman, asked me whether I would be interesting in crewing. I gave an immediate reply of “yes!” More then the opportunity to be with him and the experience I will have I believe the Wounded Warrior Project is extremely worthwhile. I spent two years in Vietnam and remember very well how both wounded and healthy were treated upon return.

Cycling history and its importance to me: Back in 2002 Kyle thought I should get into cycling. I promised him if he made it back from Iraq alive I would by a bike. Since then I have done a number of century rides and the races of Mt. Evans (Colorado) and Mt. Washington (New Hampshire) every year. I ride over 3000 miles per year and climb over 200,000 feet per year. Cycling is what keeps me young.

Who are your heroes? People who live by the code of honesty and integrity and put others first and my son.

What do want to accomplish by crewing and supporting Team 4Mil? I would like to make the race as easy as possible for the racers and assist them in raising as much money as possible.

Phil Houck

Occupation: Mechanical Engineer

Employer: Arizona Public Service

College: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Arizona State University

How long have you known about RAAM? What triggered your decision to crew? In 2004 some friends watched RAAM roll through Arizona. In 2005 I rode RAAM as part of an 8 person team with those friends to see what it was all about.

Cycling history and its importance to me: I ride for fun, fitness, and psychotherapy. I’m not a bike racer. but I have ridden across Arizona two times, across the country once on a RAAM team, and attended several PAC and other riding camps.

Who are your heroes? I think anyone who slays a personal dragon is a hero, and that’s most of us. I’m impressed when I see what other people have faced and overcome.

What intimidates you most about RAAM? The time involved in training for it as well as the time involved in organizing and funding an effort to race. I’ve ridden RAAM and I’ve been a crew chief; either way it seems to take over your life for about a year.

Tim Omlor

Occupation: Student/US Navy

Employer: United States Navy

College: U.S.Naval Academy, 2010

Age: 24

How did you become involved with Team 4Mil? I’ve been supporting Peggy LeGrand and the Naval Academy Club Cycling Team since last year. When she signed up to do the race, I said I would like to crew. I got even more excited when I heard I’d be working with Steve Curlee.

What is your athletic history? I’ve dabbled a bit in several different areas. I never really got too involved in any organized sports. Mostly, I’m an outdoors kind of guy. I like hiking, biking, running, swimming, climbing, kayaking, scuba diving, etc.

Do you have a military affiliation? I enlisted in the Navy out of high school. After a year and a half at nuke school in Charleston, I got into the Naval Academy and reported here in June of 2006. After I graduate in May, I’ll be going across the country to Monterey, CA for grad school. From there I’ll go back to nuke school and on to submarines.

What do you look forward to most about RAAM? I’m looking forward to doing something very meaningful with a great group of people. It’s going to be hard and dirty. We’re gonna get upset with one another. I’m gonna sleep in the passenger seat of a minivan for a week and I’m not going to shave. I’m looking forward to all of it.

What do you look forward to least? I’m dreading having to say goodbye to the great group of people when we’re done. We’re all going to be very close at the end of the race, but after that everyone has to go back to their lives.

Beth Kelsey

Occupation: Post-Rehabilitation Personal Trainer

Employer: Town of Erie, CO

College: MS University of Connecticut, BS Northwestern College

How did you become involved with Team 4Mil? I was kindly asked to join as part of the crew by Jim Weinstein.

What is your athletic history? What I am about to say is absolutely sacrilegious in this setting, but I have very little cycling experience. I have only worked with cyclists. All my personal athleticism lies in running, rock climbing, hiking, and typical gym rat activities.

Do you have a military affiliation? I have no personal affiliation with the military except via good friends.

What do you look forward to most about RAAM? I look forward to all the adventure holds. I am unable to say there is one specific aspect that surpasses all the rest. I have a distinct feeling there will be much unexpected held within the expected.

What do you look forward to least? Honestly, all the sitting. I get really antsy

I didn’t even consider it until I saw that it had changed its finish to Annapolis a couple of years ago which I found intriguing and then this last year, was asked if my son and I wanted to help escort finishers in from the last TS (time station) to City Dock. Though we had a prior commitment, the discussion with Roy Collins to potentially join or field a team began and then a chance meeting with Fred Boethling sealed the deal for me and here we are. Racing For (4) the Military and helping out the WWP (Wounded Warrior Project). Woo-Hoo!!!

Then, these last two years has gotten me interested in competitive cycling and so I obtained a license, raced in some local events last year and this past year and also am the Junior Team Captain for the ABRT (Annapolis Bicycle Racing Team). I am in this knee deep and loving every minute of it. Goal: Take the podium in some Cat 5 races and move up to Cat 4 early in the season.
